Fuhai is a self-esteemed ordinary Chinese who tries to catch up with his neighbors in life but he suffers too many miseries and hardships. From the time when Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty was in power (in the late 1890s) to the establishment of the Republic of China, Fuhai had been trying to be somebody, at least, to be a man who is not despised by others. Everything seems to go against his will. His wife is cheated away by his closest friend. He learns to paper walls by trade but it is out of date after the establishment of the Republic. He then chooses to be a policeman, a despised vocation in which you are servile to the rich but cruel to the poor. He tries every means to live with esteem but ends in fail.
