In the 30s of the 20th century, Chen Bai Lu, a young polite and pretty woman, lives a happy life with her poet husband in a seaside village. But soon the harsh realities of life strike her husband so much that he grows irritable and depressed. After their little daughter dies of a disease, the two end their marriage in divorce.
Chen Bai Lu then goes to the city for help from one of her remote kinsfolk. She becomes a dancing girl and soon is well known as the Queen of Dancers and a film star throughout the city with the flattering sponsorship from Pan Yue Ting, a married man and general manger of Da Feng Bank. Chen gradually grows used to a life of luxury and dissipation.
Granny Gu Ba is a rich widow and she always tries to be young and attractive. She idles her time day and night either on cards-playing or on dancing, cohabiting an actor almost 20 years younger than herself. Of course this man loves nothing but her money.
At a benefit performance Chen Bai Lu catches the fancy of Jin Ba, a rascal and despot. He forces her to be his sexual partner and even transfers her to serve the military or government officials. This shame shatters her last self-respect, leaving her indulged in drinking and smoking. She becomes Jin Ba's plaything after he murders her dance mate and traps her faithful friend Pan Yue Ting into bankruptcy. Fang Da Sheng, her middle school mate has also leaves her. When the sun rises again she is found lying on a bed after taking too many sleeping pills.
