In March 1948, KMT's attacks against the key sectors of the Liberated Areas have been shattered by PLA and so the time is ripe to counterattack. Thus a series of the Great Decisive Wars that determine the fate of China are being planned. On Sep. 12, Liaoshen Campaign begins and soon the PLA soldiers capture Jinzhou, a vital passage city to the Northeast China and on Oct. 14, Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province, is taken over. Under those circumstances Jiang Jieshi, president of KMT, orders the corps led by General Du Yuming to launch a counteroffensive against Jinzhou but it ends in failure. The soldiers of the PLA's Northeast Field Army then break up the corps led by General Liao Yaoxiang into many pockets and wipe them up one by one. Many cities such as Shen Yang and Ying Kou are liberated one after another. With a view to the victory of Liao-shen Campaign and the favorable situations of the Northeast China, Mao Zedong then predicts that the PLA will fundamentally destroy KMT and wipe out almost all of its troops in about one year.
